Danger of Volcanic Ash Clouds
Volcanic ash clouds are a serious hazard to aviation. They can cause damage to aircraft engines, reduce visibility, and pose a threat to flight safety. We provide real-time information on volcanic ash activity, allowing pilots to avoid dangerous areas and make informed decisions about their flight paths.
The nine VAACs (Volcanic Ash Advisory Centres), have been designated by the International Civil Aviation Organization to provide their expertise to civil aviation in case of significant volcanic eruptions.

Monitoring and Reporting
Our servers monitor volcanic activity at the covered VAACs every hour. When an alert is detected or an update to an existing eruption is received, we promptly notify our virtual pilots with a comprehensive internal notification. This includes the volcanic ash report, associated charts, and flight guidance.

Flight in visible/discernible ash must be avoided. When operating in areas where volcanic activity may occur pilots shall be vigilant and aware of their responsibilities to report any activity immediately.
Operational Considerations:
If volcanic ash is suspected, exit the volcanic ash as quickly as possible. Consider a 180° turn and reduce thrust by descending to minimize ash ingestion in the engines. Refer to the Flight Crew Training Manual for further guidance.
Volcanic Ash Advisories and Graphs are those issued by Met Office VAAC which are published for various vertical blocks of airspace. Volcanic Ash information for pilots are available through Volcanic ASHTAMs and advisories as well as NOTAMs.
